Deep in the dark forests of the Ardennes above Les Hautes-Rivières once stood the castle of Linchamps, today little more than stones in the woodland. Local legend has it that the last lady of the castle returns at night: wrapped in a thin white veil, she sits in a rock cleft known as the Spinner's Chair, working a spinning wheel that turns without a sound. The Ardennes rank among France's most legend-rich landscapes, crossed by wild hunts and forest spirits, and the spinner of Linchamps is one of their best-known figures.
