Château d'Esquelbecq is a moated Flemish brick castle in French Flanders, close to the Belgian border. It is said to be haunted by the "lady with the little dog" — a woman named Sophie who by tradition died when fire swept the castle during the Second World War, and who has since been seen walking the halls with her dog. Visitors have also told of a ghostly knight in the grounds. The castle, one of whose towers dramatically collapsed in 1984, has been carefully restored and periodically opens its park and parts of the building to visitors.
