A late legend holds that the floor of the church of Santa María in Turruncún — an old consecrated burial ground — cracked open, so that human bones came up and were scattered among the ruins of the village. The story has made the ghost village a destination for the paranormally minded, who come with tape recorders hoping to catch voices between the house walls.

The mining village on the slope beneath Peña Isasa flourished in the early twentieth century but emptied when the mines closed, and by the late 1980s it stood completely deserted. As early as 1929 an earthquake shook the area and left its marks on the houses. Today Turruncún is La Rioja's best-known ghost village: ruined streets, a roofless church and a silence walkers rarely forget.
