The Renaissance complex of the Hospital de las Cinco Llagas in Seville was built between 1546 and 1558, then one of Europe's largest hospitals, popularly known as the Hospital of the Blood. Here in the 1730s served the historically documented Sister Úrsula, notorious for her harshness towards patients, until she herself succumbed to a plague epidemic. Ever since, a nun in an old-fashioned habit, keys jangling at her belt, is said to walk the corridors at night, pausing at bedsides to straighten the sheets. The hospital closed in 1972 and since 1992 has housed the Parliament of Andalusia – where renovation workers and prominent politicians alike, including the region's first president Plácido Fernández Viagas, are said to have encountered her.
