For weeks after the wreck the sea kept casting the dead against the rocks, until 142 bodies had been returned to land. The villagers of Xaviña carried them up out of the surf and buried them at the site of the disaster, behind a plain stone wall among the cliffs, far from the nearest house. This stretch of shore is called the Costa da Morte, the Coast of Death, and with its countless wrecks it has carried a reputation as haunted ground for as long as anyone remembers.

On the night of 10 November 1890 the British training ship HMS Serpent was smashed against Punta do Boi in a storm. Of 175 men aboard — most of them young cadets bound for Sierra Leone — three survived. For decades, passing British warships fired a salute as they sailed by the grave.
