The Teatre Romea on Carrer de l'Hospital has staged plays since 1863, and by the house's own legend every great theatre has a ghost – Romea's is Margarida Xirgu, the Catalan stage's brightest star, who died in exile in Uruguay in 1969, never able to return. Many Catalan actors claim to have seen her figure in the dressing rooms: a woman in old-fashioned clothes watching them in the mirror, gone the moment they turn around. Companies tell of footsteps in empty corridors after the curtain falls and doors swinging open onto darkened rooms. The theatre itself has embraced the tale, describing performance as a séance – a way of summoning its homesick diva night after night.
