La Boqueria on the Rambla was built in the 1840s on the site of the Carmelite convent of Sant Josep, burned and demolished after the friars were driven out – the market stalls stand literally on top of the convent's courtyards and graves. The quarter's darkest legend reaches further back: after the pogrom of 1391, when Barcelona's Jewish population was massacred, folk tradition claims the victims' bones ended up as building material in walls nearby. Night workers in the hall have for generations told of hooded figures glimpsed between the stalls after closing, of footsteps in empty aisles and goods found moved by morning. The market's daytime bustle, Barcelonans whisper, rests on a floor of forgotten dead.
