Around St Clement's church on Rømø lives the island's eeriest tradition. On the Kirkebjerge just north of the church a skipper met a headless figure carrying its head under its arm; only later did he learn that his boyhood friend had been beheaded in New Orleans at exactly that hour. The island had its spøgenkikkere, people who could see what had not yet happened, and when owls screamed from the church tower everyone knew someone was going to die. A merrier legend tells of the trickster Pua Modders from Sylt, who convinced the Rømø people that the church could be pushed a few ells southward: he set a red jacket as a marker on the south side, had them shove at the wall until the jacket was out of sight — and turned up in that same jacket the following Sunday. Along the churchyard wall stand the whaling captains' gravestones in a row, and inside hang the hooks they had forged for their silk hats.
