The Goose Tower is all that remains of Vordingborg Castle, Denmark's largest fortress — and this is Valdemar Atterdag's place, the king condemned in the ballads to ride a restless hunt through the night for all eternity. The legend of the Wild Hunt follows him across Zealand: a thundering train of black hounds and huntsmen sweeping through the dark, and the wise man leaves gates and doors propped open so the hunt can pass without stopping. The castle was founded under Valdemar the Great around 1160 and expanded by Atterdag in the 1360s to nine towers and a curtain wall over 800 metres long. In 1367 he was threatened with war by 77 German Hanseatic cities; his reply was an insult cast in metal, a gilded goose set on top of the tower and word that he feared them no more than 77 cackling geese. The goose is still there. You can climb all the way up.
