In Theodor Storm's 'grey town' of Husum stands North Frisia's only castle, a 16th-century Renaissance palace. Local legend tells of young Adelheid, who was abandoned by her beloved late one night. In despair she threw herself from a castle window – and her body was never found. Ever since, she has been known as the White Lady of Husum: a pale figure said to float through the castle's corridors, and by some accounts even to visit guests. Over the years, both visitors and Husum residents have claimed to see or hear her. The castle's delicate crocus bloom each spring stands in stark contrast to its sorrowful nocturnal guest.
