Schloss Nordkirchen in the Münsterland is Westphalia's largest Baroque residence, known as the 'Versailles of Westphalia' – but the palace has a dark underside. Legend tells of the steward Schenkewald, who tormented the peasants, extracted excessive taxes and pocketed the difference. After his death he found no rest, haunting the palace so violently that help had to be summoned: one night two Capuchin monks arrived in a black carriage and carried the spirit away towards the Davert, the misty ancient forest south of Münster. In other versions it was the devil himself who came to collect him. In the Davert, Schenkewald is still said to race along in a four-horse carriage among the bogs and will-o'-the-wisps.
