The star-shaped fortress on the hill above Halifax was completed in 1856 and is guarded today by costumed interpreters — and also, it is said, by the Grey Lady. According to legend she was engaged to a soldier at the Citadel who took his own life on their wedding day, and ever since she has walked the halls of the cavalier building and sat in a rocking chair on its third-floor porch, searching for her fiancé. Those who have encountered her describe a woman in a long dress who dissolves before their eyes, leaving behind the scent of roses. The fortress now runs its own ghost tours after dark.
