Of the Sapieha family's grand castle at Halshany, only crumbling brick ruins remain today – but its most famous resident never moved out. According to legend, a poor young man fell in love with princess Hanna Halshanskaya and stole to their meetings disguised in a monk's habit. When the princess's furious family exposed him, he was walled up alive in the castle wall. Ever since, the Black Monk walks the ruins – a dark hooded figure appearing at dusk, who has earned Halshany its reputation as the most haunted place in Belarus.
