The Cemitério da Soledade was laid out in 1850, as yellow fever reaped Belém's citizens, and became the city's grand burial ground with magnificent tombs beneath towering mango trees. Since burials ceased in 1880 the legends have grown unchecked: most famous is the Missa dos Mortos, the midnight mass of the dead said to be celebrated in the old chapel, and the tale of a woman's spirit seeking love among the graves. At the tomb bearing the statue of a naked child – Zezinho – the faithful light candles and pray for the miracles the child is rumoured to grant. The cemetery's spirits fill the classic book "Visions and Hauntings of Belém" by Walcyr Monteiro.
