A journey back in time

In the heart of the Östergötland countryside lies Bona, a place where time has stopped but whose history still whispers through the abandoned buildings. Hidden away in the forest, this site once held first a reformatory and later a mental hospital. Today the complex stands deserted, but its reputation for hauntings and unexplained events lives on.

The reformatory

In 1902 Bona was transformed from a quiet farm into a reformatory for so-called wayward boys. The young boys sent here from all over Sweden met a harsh daily life shaped by strict discipline and hard labour. Their days were filled with physical work in farming and industry, and they were made to obey the unyielding rules that governed their lives. Many of those who survived their time at Bona remember the place with dread. It should be added that many of the boys later found both work and a good life thanks to their time here.

The mental hospital

When the reformatory closed in 1948, Bona changed once again — this time into Västra Ny hospital, a psychiatric institution for men found not criminally responsible. The already bleak atmosphere deepened further as the facility filled with patients who often suffered from severe mental illness. Many were locked in, both physically and mentally, and the sound of wailing and screaming could be heard at night through the hospital's thick walls.

Some patients tried to escape, but rarely with success. The few who managed to leave returned quickly, either on their own or by force. The heavy isolation, physical as well as psychological, left deep marks on patients and staff alike.

Abandoned, but not forgotten

The hospital closed in 1981 and the last patients were moved out. The buildings stood empty and the place slowly fell into obscurity, despite brief attempts to revive it as a refugee reception centre and a folk high school. None of these new uses could give Bona back its vitality. For nearly twenty years the site has stood completely abandoned, decaying gradually into a ruined backdrop to a dark chapter of Swedish history.

But the place is not entirely empty. Visitors who have ventured to Bona report strange events — unexplained sounds, voices heard from nowhere, and cold winds sweeping through rooms with no door left open. Many believe the site's past is still present, that the cries of the boys and the lamenting of the patients never quite left the buildings.

Anyone visiting Bona today meets more than physical ruins. They meet a history of discipline and suffering that still seems to echo through the walls. And if you listen closely enough, perhaps you will hear those echoes from the past yourself.
