The building known as Bispgården in Ragunda municipality may look like any other in a northern Swedish industrial town, but accounts from its tenants suggest something stranger. Unexplained footsteps have been heard on the floor below when no one was there. Doors slam, and sounds of movement come from silent, empty rooms. Even a cat has reacted to the invisible presence, showing strong signs of distress.

An industrial town with history

Bispgården, situated between Östersund and Sundsvall, has long been a hub for heavy industry and energy production. With three hydroelectric power stations and one of Vattenfall's operations centres, along with a growing international market, it is an important community in eastern Ragunda. Beyond industry there is an activity park with a playground, basketball court and obstacle course. From Älgårdsberget, popular trails including Järåstigen, Blomstigen and Geologistigen offer views over the Indalsälven river and the powerful Byforsen rapids.

Döda fallet — a historic catastrophe

Bispgården is also known for its proximity to Döda fallet, the Dead Falls, a dramatic natural formation created in 1796 when the entrepreneur Magnus Huss — known as Vildhussen, the Wild Huss — built a timber flume at what was then Lake Ragunda. One night the flume burst, and within a few hours the lake had emptied. What remained was Döda fallet, a historic catastrophe that is today a fascinating destination.

The Thai Pavilion

Near Bispgården stands the Thai Pavilion at Utanede. Built in memory of King Chulalongkorn of Thailand, who visited Sweden in 1897, the pavilion is a unique monument to an unexpected royal visit to northern Sweden. The Thai king chose to visit Norrland rather than the south of the country, creating a cultural connection between the two nations that endures today.
