The small baroque castle of Primmersdorf on the river Thaya in the northern Waldviertel carries one of the region's strangest ghost tales. Overnight guests have told of a monk in a white habit suddenly standing at the bedside, wrapped in a cold blue-yellow glow. The figure silently studies the sleeper – then dissolves through the wall as noiselessly as it came. Who the monk was and why he walks the castle no one knows, which has made him a fixture of the Waldviertel's ghost lore.
