The ruin of Schaunberg Castle near Hartkirchen was once the seat of the mighty counts of Schaunberg, who defied the Habsburgs themselves until their power was crushed. Among the weathered walls of Upper Austria's largest castle ruin, hauntings are firmly rooted: around midnight, two bloodied figures are said to appear between the remnants. Who they were in life the legend does not say – perhaps victims of the dynasty's many feuds. Anyone wandering the ruin at dusk would do well to leave before the stroke of twelve.
